Our new mayor Ilana has one hell of a job ahead of her.
13 mil pesos in the hole that they can account for, and no chairs to sit on at city hall.
I just hope she goes after the so called X mayor like they're doing in Santiago.
The X stood on the stage for paving all the roads in Sousa, and they still haven't been paid for.
Our new mayor needs to string the X in front of Classicos and make a statement that if you steal from the people, you'll be hung w/ your pants down!
Get the military to take over the entire policing, and give them the direction as to what and how you want things done, just like they do in Puerto Plata the south east of the DR!
These guys are tough, well trained, respected, and they know the how to get the job done.

The garbage has always been a problem in the D.R. for the many years since I have been going there.
It's nice to see at least one small town start to do somthing about it.
Now, if the rest of the polititions in the country can take the example from Seniora Neumann, this country will be a better place for it.

Hello,
Please read the article below.
It involves the wife of Haitian Presidential candidate Rene St. Fort.
She was arrested for alleged fraud here in Ottawa Canada, July 2010.
You wrote an article about him awhile back.
For your information Rene St. Fort did was disbarred in 2000.
He was convicted for fraud and spent 18 months in jail.
Please read article below.
Woman in $1.1M fraud case in jail pending bail hearing
By Andrew Seymour, The Ottawa Citizen
A woman accused of defrauding her employer, a provincially funded agency that cares for disabled adults, is to stay behind bars until a bail hearing next week.
Wearing a black-and-white-striped shirt, dark-rimmed glasses and with her ankles shackled, Yolande Knight, 46, was led into an Ottawa courtroom Friday for the brief appearance.
The former director of finance for Total Communication Environment is accused of making off with more than $1.1 million over nine years.
Her matter was adjourned until Wednesday.
Outside court, Knight's lawyer, Jean Claude Dubuisson, said he is hoping his client will be released at that time.
'It's the first time in the system.
She has no criminal record,' he said.
'It's not the best day for her.'
The Crown is opposing her release.
According to police, members of the agency learned the financial director had misused more than $1.1 million over nine years after a review of the agency's financial statements.
The agency filed a complaint and police began investigating in 2009.
Karen Belyea, executive director of Total Communication Environment, an Ottawa-based, non-profit charitable organization that provides care to about 90 adults with multiple disabilities, said Thursday that 'certain irregularities' were brought to the attention of TCE's management and board of directors following an audit.
'When it became apparent that satisfactory answers would not be forthcoming, our director of finance was suspended.
Subsequently, her employment was terminated.'
The agency also informed the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services.
Police arrested Knight on Thursday.
She has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, one count of breach of trust, one count of theft over $5,000, one count of uttering a forged document, and one count of possession of the proceeds of crime.

Why doesn't the town of Sousa or the province of Puerto plata or even the country of the Dominican Republic try recycling.
This would get rid of the garbage problem and create jobs.
This is also being ecologically responsible.
I also am discusted by all the filth and smelly garbage strewn everywhere on this paradise island.
Paradise is being lost and turning into a giant garbage heap.
Either that or forget tourisim and let North America start paying The Dominican Republic to send over boatloads of garbage to dump there as well.
It's time to leave the stone age behind and join the modern world.

If you desire to avoid people who are consistently rude then look no farther than the Dominican people.
But hey, it’s their country I choose to live in.
And who am I to post warnings about others coming to live here.
That's the issue I have with foreigners like you who think they have a right to voice or post about certain groups of people who choose to live or visit here in the DR!
It's probably not that important to others, but why did you choose to attack only one group?

The same thing that happened to Lois, happened to me too.
I lent $10,000 pesos to a good friend who I trusted to buy medication for his sick mother in Santo Domingo.
As soon as the guy got the money, he disappeared and none of his friend know where he is.
I tried to explain the situation to the Politur, but, since I didn't know his name (only his nickname: Pepito) I had to pay $3000 pesos to start an investigation and $2500 pesos more to the Fiscal.
Actually I gave the money to a friend because I don't speak Spanish and he also disappeared.
I didn't have enough money to pay a lawyer, so I hope to meet him again when I'll go back on vacation in about 3-4 weeks.

As a matter of fact, in 2011, May 31st, it will be the 50th anniversary of Trujillo's assasination and I shall be there to participate in the celebrations of this historic moment.
Hopefully, General Antonio Imbert Barrera will be there too.
See you all next year!

Well I guess Lois has left the building.
Has anyone seen Marco?
Maybe he to has left the building.
We can only hope and this may become a letter to the editor section instead of a soapbox for Marco and Lois.
Now lets offer up ideas one at a time.
They have volunteers inoculating the dogs and that is great now maybe a free VD clinic once a month for the girls/just a thought.

Good riddance Lois!
I've walked around Sosua all times of the day and night and have yet to have a problem.
You have crime everywhere in the world and even family steals from one another at times.
You have to live and just pray it doesn't happen to you one day.

Matthew the restaurants and vendors provide meals at a reasonable price and if you need to eat for a cheap price maybe you should stay home and come again when you can afford it.
These people are working to provide food and shelter for their families and we should all look for affordable not cheap.
You get what you pay for.
Maybe a poor choice of words on your part?
Have a nice day,
Matthew.

Sorry ladies and gentlemen,
I do not go out at night 'flashing' my money.
I knew the thief for nine years and his family.
I trusted them and thouht them to be 'nice' people.
I was wrong.
I went to the police and contacted a lawyer.
No help.
I will not contribute to this anymore.

The Grilled chickens that you wrote about three months ago.
They are down the street from PJ's.
WHat time do the sell for a better Price?
It is a special with 1/2 chicken and potatoes for like $4.
They are on a corner on the south side of the street.
You wrote that a lot of prostutes eat there for the special.
Also what are some other specials around town were you can eat food for a cheap price?
Thanks
Matthew

Yeah, Fulana!
Bruce Reade is right.
I've been visiting D.R. for the past 5 to 10 years and only once I went to an all inclusive.
Pedro Clisante at night is not as dangerous than Ottawa by night.
Or Gatineau, for that matter.
Dominicans are great and won't try to rob you if you don't flash your money/jewelery in their faces.

So nice to heair that people are getting tired of Lois and Marco allways on here talking about things they know nothing about.
Been going there for 28 years now and way befor me Sosua has allways been a great party town that never sleeps.
Thank God there alot more people like me that go there and spend alot of money to keep Sosua going.
It's a great place to go and I love it.

Love it!
Good to see reaction.
I've been down here in Sosua now for 2 weeks, 2 more to go, this time.
I love it here.
Everyone, and I do mean everyone, that I have met are friendly.
Treat people nicely - and you get it in return.
The 'corruption' and 'crime' is far less here than in many other areas I've traveled.
Beautiful weather, friendly people, warm ocean: pretty hard to beat!
Marco, Lois: appreciate what is here, and quit drowning in your sorrows!
It is a wonderful country and I will be back

I completely agree with Harrison from Victoria, Canada.
It was much nicer when Marco was 'quiet' for a while untill the girl from Jolly Rogers ruined everything in calling him to 'comment'.
So impertinent!
Can anyone else tell us about the good and nice things there are in D.R. and Sosua, so other people might want to come and visit?

Are we waking up here?
Great!
I was worried that this site was by design trying to keep folks from traveling to the DR.
I was also wondering why anyone would advertise on a web site that discourages travel by all this negativity.
I've been there many times and find much safer than many places in the USA, and probably Canada.
When the paranoid leave their home land and travel to the DR they have the same problems they had at home (USA or Canada) because they bring them their own personalities with them.
Simple rules:
1. Politicians will be what they are everywhere.
Don't expect it to be different then you have at home.
2. Don't go into poor areas flashing cash or worse drunk and flashing cash.
If you do you should be robbed.
Don't try to convince your self your being nice as you rub your privilege in the face of the poor.

To change the system in place with this Govt., only Dominicans can change things.
And as long as the majority is uneducated, or trying to sober up from the President Beer addiction, things will never change.
Have you ever seen a Gringo convince a Dominican he is wrong?
Steve you keep asking what we are doing instead of complaining, well for one we are providing a valuable source of income for the Dominicans and their govt.
They would survive without us here, however would their Govt. survive or would it start to look like the Govt. in Haiti?

Free bags of food for the Mothers!
Show me the politician who is going to make the fathers pay the mothers for the food for the kids.
Show me the politician who will stop mothers who allow their sons to steal.
Show me the politician who will stop allowing the pedofiles to enter the country.
Show me the politician who will tell the men to work.
Just take a ride from Sosua to Cabarete and see it is the Haitians doing the hard work while the men of your country sit at home out of the sun, teaching their children how to steal and pimping their esposas to the sick tourists.
Show me the politician who is not going to pacify the people by filling the people's heads with more excuses to prevent change!

Steve,
Welcome my friend, but with all due respect, if you would take the time to go back and read the last 20 or 30 posts (many which are mine) you will see that I have already addressed and answered your questions.
Unfortunatly, it falls on deaf ears because the majority of the people that complain about these problems are the root causes themselves.
They fail to see the spiritual roots and realities behind the weeds that are creeping up in thier Grande Presidente bottles as they wait for a new mayor and a coat of asphalt to come along and save thier imaginary paradise on earth. (Come quickly Lord Jesus)

-I do not live in the DR but visit there often for many years.
I love the place and there are good and bad people there as there are everywhere.
Mentality is te problem.
Unfortunately, the bad are allowed to be bad, even by the good.
I was robbed big time by someone I knew and trusted for a long, long time.
Unfortuately, even good people I know just brush the theft off and say, 'Oh well'.
The police said 'Oh well'.
Supposed friends say 'Oh well'.
One has choices.
One chooses to do good or bad.
At the end of the day, each of us will answer for our choices.
When the mentality changes, things will change.
Until then, life will continue to be as it is and only get worse for the people living and visiting there.
Sad but true!

Lois - excellent points.
Marco - I was just stating an opinion and posing a question.
Sorry, new here, so I do not know if you live in Sosua or not.
Marco, I see you do.
The question then becomes, if you do live in Sosua, and believe the root of the issue is corrupt or inadequate political representation - then what actions are you taking to resolve the issues?
I don't know - you may be doing lots.
Just providing some food for thought.
Far too often people complain about corruption in government yet fail to actually do anything about it.

-I do not know much about Canada but in the US it is the plans that the politicians put in place after they are elected that make the US what it is.
Taxes help and we have to pay taxes.
These taxes create jobs. n the Netherlands even the prostitutes pay taxes.
Why not legalize it and tax it.
It happens to be a very old profession.
Create some jobs that will remove the trash that people throw all over the streets.
Puts laws in effect that punish criminals.
Make the fathers support their children.
Provide and enforce education for all children.
Provide birth control and proper medical care.
No more police who are corrupt.
Stop electing the politicians who back Chavez.
Lots of workable alternatives but very little honesty and truth!
Lois, USA
3 May 2010
I get a kick out of reading the comments on here.
Lots of great words, solve poverty, get rid of prostitution, create jobs.
Good words - how bout some workable ideas or action plans.
To criticize politicians for empty words, yet at the same time offer no workable alternative is hypocritical at best.
oh well - at least it's somewhat entertaining reading, somewhat.

29 April 2010
Thanks for your explanation Marco.
Everything you say may be true.
But there is much needed in the DR.
Honest politicians and police, jobs, taxes, a legal system inforced, morals, personal responsibility, education and the list could go on and on.
There are so many whiners and criminals there and paradise is an ugly place.
Self esteem, self respect and respect for others is non-existent.
When crime, drugs, prostitution, sanky-panky are the main stay for a country what is the message being shouted to the world.
Like I said, 'Wake up and smell the coffee'!
Lois, USA
28 April 2010
Lois,
You must have missed my point somewhere or just misunderstood me altogether because not once in any of my posts have I condoned anything illegal (including prostituion or drug dealing if thats what you mean).
Please tell me what you are reffereing to so I can re word the comment I made so you will understand it in its proper context.
What I meant by that comment is the Hipocrocy of the Government going after the little Dominican for selling undeclared sea shells in the sea shop while they turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to the real and more pressing problems that are destroying the town of Sosua.
Btw, Did Mr.President come for a Presidente on the beach while the power was out?
How did the newly crowned Carribean Messiah find time to take a five minute Sunday drive through the slums of Charamicos in the midst of his campaign to become the next Haitian president?
Marco, Sosua
28 April 2010
The politicians are all out now even the President making a visit to the poor neighborhoods.
The meetings are held to fight the crime and drug smuggling.
Hello!
It is the poverty that is breeding all the crime.
What is being done to alliviate the poverty.
Nothing.
This President has already had two opportunities to work on this.
There are no jobs, the streets are lined with waste, tourists are not safe, children are fatherless and hungary.
Criminals are allowed to rob and kill.
A paradise that could be enjoyed by many is being destroyed.
Find some good and honest people to make the DR a place it is meant to be.
The biggest criminals are allowing the destruction.
Wake up and smell the coffee!
Lois, USA
27 April 2010
The criminals are coming together to try and take a bite out of crime in Sosua lol.
Jesus said 'if the blind lead the blind they will both fall into a ditch.
What do you do when the trusted authorities that are being paid to administer justice on every level are at the same time being paid off by every illigal alien and foriegn capitalist to make sure the sanky panky continues?
Ask almost any police officer and politician in the D.R if thier monthly propinas do not add up to more than there 250 a month salary lol.
Again, sorry to be so negative.
Marco ,Sosua
27 April 2010
Sorry Marco,
I agree what you say about the capitalists but I do not agree with anything illegal.
You can not be against one form of crime and condone another.
That is double talk.
Let's have some straight talk.
They are both forms of greed.
Unfortunately, let's look at the government that is allowing the greed to happen by all evil people.
Bad people are there taking advantage of innocent people and will drive the tourists away.
People everyday are getting sucked into the crime.
Nothing is done to the criminals no matter who they are.
Lois, USA
26 April 2010
Confiscate the illegal merchandise in the gift shops while the drug dealing and prostitution in the street dances on to the latest bachata C.D.
This is nothing less LESS than desperate big shot capitalists paying off the watchdogs in the name of promoting tourism in thier relentless attempts to squeeze the little local Dominicans out of existance.
The majority of the gift shops that are rented out on the beaches and streets of Sosua, Cabarete and even Bavaro are rented out by illegal Haitians who are not only reguraly shaken down by the police for the rights to run thier shacks, but should atleast be required to have legal status in the country before opening a shop.
Leave the local Dominicans alone.
Come to think of it, The majority of the foriegn capitalists running the bar and restaurant scene in the country have no legal documentation either but have unwritten contracts and codes of ethics with the powers that be for the rights to operate.
The cabanas on Sosua beach pay a small 100 peso a week fee for the professional services of a 70 year old retired brugal factory security officer to make sure thier cabana does not go up in flames while they sleep lol.
In case anybody hasn't noticed, they are not growing any more sugar cane fields in the country these days and at the present, there is an estimated 200,000 Haitians crossing the border each month looking for one of those beachside villas with a for rent sign on them.
Im sorry to be so negative people, I really am.

22 April 2010
Lois,
Please do not take my word for it when it comes to your eternal destiny my friend.
Atleast read the entire new testament for yourself and let God answer the questions you are asking me because slthough He chooses to use broken sinners like me to communicate His perfect message, He does not need to, therefore I say that if you or anyone else is seeking the truth and questioning the credibility of my comments then I encourage you to check the manual for yourself and see what the King says about hell and salvation and what a person must do to be truly saved and born again.
The fact is that we are all born sinners which is why the bible says in Romans 'all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God' as well as giving many warnings against people like you are describing that 'have an appearance of Godliness' but are really wolves in sheep clothing who haunt the whorehouse and disco on Saturday and ride to church Sunday on the back of the motoconcho they stole so they can play choirboy.
Jesus was talking to the poor in Matthew chapter 6 when he told them 'dont worry about your life, the food you will eat and the clothes you will wear because your heavenly Father knows you have need of these before you ask Him, but seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be given unto you as well.
So I say again, God is the solution, not a new mayor or a coat of asphalt.
Love Marco
22 April 2010
Marco
-I am happy that you were saved yet would love to know why you were first led to sin.
The dominican who stole and lied to me attends church and his family also does.
Do not be fooled by people who profess to be Godly.
Poverty is a poor excuse to lie and rob.
There are many people in the DR allowed to take advantage of people.
The people who are taken advantage of receive no help from the police of dominican people.
One is told just to accept the fact and move on.
It is disheartening.
These evil ways are passed on from one generation to the next.
I am a forgiving person yet think that the deeds of evil has a lasting effect on many perhaps innocent.
We all will answer for the evil we do.
Lois, USA
22 April 2010
Untal,
Its clear that you have not put the brugal bottle down nor picked the bible up long enough to read and understand not only the word of God, but also my previous posts.
It seems that you are the one judging me my friend, does it not?
Do I stutter?
Please go back and read both when the goma wears off and then you can wield your sword at me with 20 20 vision.
I have already told you that I dont blow the trumpet to be seen and glorified by men like yourself for helping old dominicans across the street, now would you like to brag to us all about how much your doing to change the status quo?
If you did read and know the bible, you would read the part that says 'all our hearts are wicked and decietful and our righteousness is as filthy rags before God'
The bible clearly teaches in no uncertain terms that the heart of man is the problem and he is the solution whioch means he has everything to do with it!
How can you say He has nothing to do with it?
Do you know more than He does?
Cowboy, I think Untal and La chi chi are the ones who should explain to us in more detail what murders they are refering to beings that they are the one who brought this up and seem to have inside information to which is obscured from the rest of us that are out of the loop?
Lets not loose our shorts over undocumented hearsay just yet.
Tranquillo!
Even though Sosua news has the potential to be a much more powerful voice and medium in which to promote or destroy tourism as well as promoting other positive changes, I do not believe that it has yet developed biceps big enough to make as great of a difference as it could nor is it under any obligation to do so.
As they themselves have said , 'this is something they do for enjoyment'. \
If I come to visit you in Calgary, your probably not going to bother telling me about the latest murders unless my life is really in jeaprody which I doubt is the case in Sosua just yet.
BTW, Sosua is anything but humble lol!
marco, sosua

O.K. can somone please explain the 10 murders everyone is talking about.
Sousa News, I believe you have an obligation to report this type of information or are you afraid of what it might do to future visitors to this humble town?
Perhaps there is another news media that you could recommend to your faithful readers that would report important information such as this.
If this is just a false rummor, then I would suggest that you likewise, disclaim the topic.
I for one get travel updates anytime anything like this happens and have not read anything about any 10 murders.
Is there anyone out there who can clue us in?

Marco,
who are you to judge?
You don't know me nor what I do to be a living witness of Jesus.
Unlike you, I don't judge, preach nor comdamn.
I act!
It is not in the words that you'll convert people, it is by your actions.
Re-read all the letters from Saint Paul and be a litle bit more humble about your faith and/or your engagement towards our Lord's Kingdom, stop judging and act accordingly to your faith, if you do really beleive in Christ.
Untal, Sosua
21 April 2010
Dear Untal,
Thanks for the compliment my friend.
Since you seem to have such a wonderful working knowledge of scripture yourself, I would like to ask you what is your excuse for not repenting and giving your life to Jesus?
Do I smell a hint of hypocricy somewhere?
'But wisdom is justified by its children'.
To answer your question in more detail, yes, I am a wretched sinner who has been save by grace through faith because of the death and ressurection of Jesus Christ, and though I am not throwing stones, I am throwing you the same life preserver that you should take hold of before acopylpse comes if you realize your own sinfulness and need of a savior before Sosua and this present world passes away.
Gods concern is not saving the town of Sosua, but rather saving the lost people in the town of Sosua.
A new earth and heaven is coming and no motoconcho smog will be present along with the 10 murders nobody talks about.
BTW, when the day comes and I am preaching the gospel in Sosua from a pulpit made of sand and palm leafs on the beach, will you be the greeter for me?

Un lesion de historia excellente!
Thank you for the wonderful and insightful article on the history of Sosua before the lions 'tigres' sanky pankys and bears came to paradise.
Wow!
I am not that old, but not a day goes by that I have not spent atleast 5 minutes wondering in borrowed nostalgia what Sosua must have looked like before the cabanas and the crime rates went up in its untouched natural virgin beauty, but this has satisfied the cats curiousity before someone kills him.
Pictures and stories like these communicate very powerful messages as they can either instill new hope and vision or completely crush ones spirit.
I myself am hopeful that God will have the last word and chapter in the history of Sosua that is yet to be written.
Thank you again!

Good preaching, Marco!
In what church can we hear you preach? Are you a priest?
A minister?
God has nothing to do with the situation in D.R.
Men have!
Funny that the Sosua News never mentionned the 10 dominicans that were murdered in the past 4-5 days.
I'm pretty sure Marco has an exterp from the Gospel to show how great sinners we are (hopefully not according to John, 'cause Apocalypse is now occuring around the World, not only in human hearts...)
'Who is without sin throw the first stone'
Untal Fulano, Sosua
19 April 2010
Let me add a chaser to that last bit Mr. Bruce and Mr.dougiej.
The heart of the problems that are in Sosua like anywhere else in the world are the problems of the fallen human heart.
Shelters and food drives may meet the temporary physical needs of a homeless starving Dominican but this is done in vain if the more important spiritual food has not been given to them in the process.
'Jesus said what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but looses his soul in hell for eternity'.
Corrupt politicians and tourist police, prostitution, violent crime and motoconcho smog are not the root problems of Sosua.
They are only symptoms of the the real disease.
If we only cut the branches of the tree off they will always grow back, but if we attack the root of the tree you will kill it and stop it from growing.
Therefore, though I do not ever neglect a hand in need when its in my power to meet that need, the majority of my work happens on my knees in the prayer closet and by sharing the gospel of Gods grace and free gift of salvation, not at the polls on election day.
My point is, give people Jeusu Christ, the spiritual medicine and food they need first which is the heart of the problem and you will then begin to see true change in the types of branches that are growing.
Marco, Sosua
19 April 2010
Yes, I love the fan mail lol.
And thank you for asking my friends because there is truly nothing more nausiating to me than a loudmouth stone thrower spilling his beer in the bleachers while his fellow soldiers spill thier blood and guts on the battlefield.
The truth is, just because you do not hear nor see does not mean that nothing is happening behind the scenes while the town goes to hell in a handbasket.
Jesus Himself said that when you do your good works, do not be like the hypocrites that blow the trumpet in the street to recieve glory from men, but rather do them in secret so that your Father in heaven will reward you openly.
That said, even if I have fed 1000 starving Dominicans in the last week, chances are you nor anybody else will ever know about it.
I do not think there is anything negative about telling the truth, do you?
I have never claimed to be 'the savior' of Sosua (unlike some famous authors that are making great names for themselves as they prance around el batey in fancy suits).
Although I may be over opinionated and a little less than @$$-- at times, I tell it like it is.
I may be well known as Marco in Sosua, but I am still just plain Mark Anthony Trombetti and I have no great wealth nor power but yet Im the richest man in the world with A heavenly Father that is all powerful.
Do you understand this?

Great Sosua story today, Care for orphans at Campo Sosúa 19/4/10.
All I want to say is that this organization is making a difference for Haiti with many Sosua people working hard.
They meet next at Jolly Rodgers Rest/Bar on May 1st, selling anything donated as the funds are needed to keep this camp going.
Now, I M H O this is something I am pleased to donate to, especially knowing Lynne Pennington & Sandi Pinsonneault.
So please folks, anything you can do to help, contact them on the day at J. R.
They will be there starting at 8.30am, May 1st.
Please help!

Hey,
I love the idea of a trade school, but I have just one question?
Just how are these motoconcho drivers and high profile social workers from the disco techs along with starving street vendors going to pay for thier Dominican Harvard like education?
Are the local entrepeneurs who are squeezing them out of the system going to hold annual fund raisers?
Besides, even if they do get a certificate or a degree, what good is that against 3 million displaced illegal Haitians that have no formal training but are willing to not only work for half the wages and a plate of rice each day, but are also willing to live in the foundations of the buildings they are hired to construct?
Anyway, bits just a thought and just another day in paradise!

Riccardo,
Cowboy is correct!
I embarked on the same adventure about two years ago.
However, beware that the Gua-Gua does not go directly to Las Terenas, but stops in Sanchez before continuing on to Las Galeras and will leave you there to fend for yourself as you are swarmed by 100 motoconches offering to drive you the rest of the way to Las Terrenas from Sanchez.
Once in Sanchez, you can wait at the Billiards bar across the street from the stop where you got off and a mini bus that comes every 30 minutes from Las Terrenas will take you the rest of the 30 minute journey for about 100 pesos.
Actually, I was unaware of that until the return trip home so I ended up taking what proved to be one of the greatest adventures of my life on the back of a motoconcho flying through the hairpin mountian curves as we weaved in, out and around the traffic that was moving to slow on a rain drenched road with my suitcase on the handle bars at about 50 miles per hour.
Dangerous, but worth the risk!
I recommend you finding a 'sober' motoconcho driver and paying the 200 pesos for the chills, thrills and the heavenly scenic vistas that would put Disneys dream makers to shame.
Disfruta!

Marco-I agree with you.
But Jesus was not a thief or a liar and he was poor.
Poverty is no excuse for these sins.
We will all answer for our sins.
God gave us the choice of good or evil.
I believe it is our responsibility to choose good over evil.
There are many good people suffering from the evil people and I am sad.

Riccardo, I believe there is a Gua-Gua, 'that's a privately run bus', looks more like a van, that runs from in front of the Texeco station at around 6:30 or 7:00 A.M.
It may say Samana on the front.
Just wave it down and it will stop for you.
Then you may have to take a taxi from the main highway into las Terrenas.
Double check with the locals around your Hotel in Sosua to confirm.
Last time I took this trip I beleive it cost around 300 pesos.
It's a great adventure, one I'll never forget.
We ended up push starting the bus a number of times as it had fuel pump problems.
The driver was so frustrated he got stone drunk and was chain smoking and spitting out the window every 15 seconds.
Anyways, I'm still alive and I will always cherish the memory with a smile and chuckle.
Or you can hire a Taxi.

Dear Paul and company!
Thank you for loosening the gag on me as it is very good to be back.
Lois!
Jesus Himself was born poor and raised into poverty and even through His ministry He chose to remain that way so that those who recognized thier 'spiritual poverty' could identify with him and come to him for healing.
As I said before Lois, the heart of these problems that your alluding to is the problem of the heart.
Social, political and economical problems require spiritual solutions, not a new coat of asphalt or a new mayor in the county seat.
2000 years ago, Jesus brought us the gospel of hope, forgiveness, love and peace that changed the lives and hearts of the most corrupt publicans, tax collectors and harlots that would eventually go on to change the world upside down forever for His glory.
Since then, the hardness of mans heart only becomes harder and colder with each generation but His message of hope and offer of salvation remains the same.
God says in the bible that the poor would always be among us until His Kingdom comes, but woe to those that oppress the poor widows and orphans (and homeless street vendors ).
God will hear them when they cry to Him and He will plead thier case.
I agree Cowboy!
Things must be getting pretty desperate for the 'big shots' if they are trying to stamp out the local empresatorios.
Dont they realize that they are literally putting a knife in thier own backs?
I hope they have alot of new fire trucks in town pretty soon because they will neeed them if they insist on crushing the little guy!
Sosua cannot survive without Bachata and Merengue on the beach or one of Ollies pork sandwhiches but it can survive without sausages, cigars and Futbol at 7.00 in the morning.
I say Adios to them and dont let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!

They want to stop food vendors on the street?
Enough that is difficult to find a decent Chimichurri in Sosua like we used to 20 years ago, that would be a shame to forbid street vendors.

I must comment on the progress that 'the local business men' are making in regards to cleaning up Pedro Clisante.
Its amazing how these 'deep pocket' people of influence seem to get more done for the town of Sosua then the politicians ever do lol.
Wolfgang is a decent guy and I have sat down and eaten his Schnitzel sandwiches on more than one occasion, but again, its all well and good for the foriegn business owners and the filthy tourists who want to give Sosuas sinful image a few shots of Botox and a Vegas like social acceptance as the coals of hell continue to approach it, but what about the the little chicken farmer from Charamicos who still cant find an egg to fry for his kiddies?
Yes, for the locals its becoming almost like Cuba with nothing more than the freedom to bitch about how bad it is here and how them damn capitalists have taken over thier land that Leo and company keeps selling off to the next highest bidder.

Perhaps the real entrepreneurs are the ones pushing around the carts.
I for one have no problem buying a meal from a Dominican street vendor.
Never got sick yet.
And tastes mighty good as well.
Leave these poor Dominicans to earn a living and feed their Children.

Its great to be back Mariza, but I must get caught up to speed Amiga.
Its intresting how the only people that seem to ever have problems with the restless natives are the ones that come down here to indulge thier sinful appetites and then in the midst of thier ignorant hypocricy, they put thier cub scout choir boy puppy faces on and cry rape when the prostitutes and the street hustling chulos take them for a ride after they wake up without thier wallets and a bad hangover.
Didnt thier mommies ever warn them not to play with matches nor strangers?
As I have said before, I have rarely if ever heard of a non-suspecting tourist getting played, injured or killed that probably didnt have it coming to them in the first place.
Sosua is the sin city of the Carribean my friends and most people come here for exactly that so why are you surprised when we reap what we sow?
Finally, anyone that is using the Shady Dominican characters working on the beach and the streets of Sosua as the barometer to measure the character of the country as a whole is badly mistaken.
That would be like someone travelling to America for the first time and only visiting the bronx for a week but using that as the measuring stick to judge the country as a whole.

Welcome Back Marco.
I totally agree with you.
I spenta month there in January.
It is obvious that there are new capitalists who have arrived and have come there with lots of money.
They have brought a higher level of putas but they are still 'putas'.

It was my third time in Sosua.
I discovered the Dominican Republic through friends and coworkers.
I like the Casa Marina but the next time I think I will go in a hotel where I can bring my dominican friends.
I saw the wedding preparation at the Tree Top bar on the beach and I think that when I get married (with a Dominican or not) I will do it too on the beach.
So romantique!
I like the people there and I will come back soon for sure on my next vacations.
Dominican are so nice and warm and generous.

Mariza,
When they stop censoring half of my comments I will come back my friend!
BTW, let these wining capitalist bitches go home to their countries where they have to pay taxes and go through the zoning board and city council hoops while they live off of thier fat stock options here in paradise while they try to short circuit the starving Dominicans trying to make an honest wage selling bananas and sugar cane on the streets of thier own God given homeland.
I cant believe this! (actually I can).
Send the capitalists and the sex tourists home and give the Dominican people back what God gave them .
Is the D.R becoming like Cuba where the locals are not allowed to come within 1 mile of the tourist zones?
Yes, get rid of the tigres, the putas and the lambones and keep the motoconcho smog at bay, but dont keep Popi and his sugar cane cart off the grass because of a few fat cigar smoking baracchos that cant concentrate on the futbol game.

Sorry Cowboy,
I disagree with you.
There are too many political parties in the DR for things to ever change.
I have seen now 4 elections and the country needs honesty, jobs and education.
Money spent is just more manipulation and more of the same.
I have known hard working honest people who have lost elections to people who are just people with money and criminal pasts.
Each time I have seen the people fooled by unkept promises.
Crime and poverty has increased.
Values are non-existent.
What good are new roads when people fill the sides of the roads with garbage.
What good is passing money out for a day.
The people do not need handouts, they need a vehicle to make their own money and the education to value a day's work.
Bribes are not the road to success.
Opportunity is a word unknown in the DR.
The women are the workers and the caretakers.
The men just whine.
The #1 career is prostitution.
It is a beatiful island being destroyed by neglectful people.

It appears from your note that you have met your match in a dominican and I wish you luck.
I have never been to the DR but will go there to have a chat with Andres.
I want to see him and watch him stumble.
As long as there are people like you who applaud these low lifes, these actions will continue.

From what I hear Dominicans are known for these actions and now I understand why.

Dear Boston, Cowboy is right.
Most of us, recurring 'gringos and gringas', have all lost some money (either lent or stolen) in the hands of charming tigrés, sexy sanky-pankies or joyful Nail Salon girl who pretended to be your sister.
Unfortunately, your mother was no exception.
The thing is: Don't throw the baby with the bath's water and don't put all the eggs in the same basket.

While I agree it's sad and a person's life was taken, it was not a theft.
The revenge motive is very common.
I know that many of the Canadian papers and the local authorities have disclosed that a Canadian male is also involved.
While it may not bring this beautiful and respected person back, my hope is that justice will be served on those responsible.

Everytime I vist he DR I am thankful that I live in a country that provides services with the taxes I pay.
I also agree with you that much education as well as laws must be enforced about these things in the DR.

i'm sure there could be car parks built on all the spare land and charge to park a certain fee for so long say 3hundred peso for all day and 150 peso for the evening and it would make work for some more people to watch the cars and bikes it would also put more money into sosua for4 health education, better roads pavements and better street lighting good idea

I too have seen the problems with garbage in the D.R.
The first time I came to the D.R., I took a guagua to Samana, the cobrador came around with a bag to collect garbage from all the passengers.
When finished, he opened the bus door and threw the garbage onto the side of the highway.
I was shocked that the people of the D.R. treat their Country like a big garbage dump.
There really is garbage everywhere you look, which in turn causes cockroachs, infection and disease.
Who wants to go spend their vacation at a dump site?
Why won't the government put large pick-up bins everywhere.
This would create a few jobs.
Why won't the Dominican people, and the polititions have a little respect for their own Country and welfare.
They should be ashamed of themselves.
There also needs to be more education, from an early age, so that the young may learn the value of their land.
It may already be to late for the older polititions and generation as they may be set on their self centered, selfish, destructive ways.
To all the people who throw garbage upon the streets, beaches and lands, Be ashamed, be very ashamed.

Hi
- great article about closing the road and allowing the businesses to open in the street.
I own a home in Sosua and love the town and surrounding areas.
Bottom line is that the area needs to attract more tourists to the area because that is how money will flow.
To me the #1 issue without question is controlling the pollution and garbage.
Here are just two examples that really made me mad:
- I saw school children on the way to school roll down their car window and just throw a whole bunch of garbage out the window directly into the road in the center of town!
- A family of 6, mother and father and 4 children were at Sosua beach for the day.
They were drinking and eating and having fun all day long.
When it came time to leave they just got up and left their pile of garbage right where it was.
No thought given to what happens to it.
The solution to this problem starts with Education and the Dominican People learning to care for the country they have and understanding that more tourists brings more money and more jobs for them.
Please continue to use your resources to help get the message out that this is a major problem.
Thanks,
John

As a traveler, Who goes to Dominican republic, (Sosua) 2-3 times a year.
I like the idea, but at the same time, Don't you think that if Pedro Clisante is blocked off at night that other roads in the area would be crowded with traffic also, from not being able to cross, or cut through.
I think to make it work, cars should be able to at least cut through the side streets to cut across and then you can still close Pedro Clisante.
Just my 2 cents.
Ggtbonna
26 March 2010
This is a great idea, to close off the pedro clisante street to traffic.
There is way too much traffic.
Perhaps the mayor and town could purchace a plot of land close by and turn it into a public parking lot, with security of course.
There could even be a small fee to park.
This would pay for security, maintainence, and create a few jobs.

Hello,
Just responding regarding the Sosua New article on Pedro Clisante.
I own a condo in Sosua and spend a good amount of time in Sosua.
I think that closing Pedro Clisante to traffic is a wonderful idea.
I like sitting at the outdoor bars/restaurants along the street but you are correct about the noise in the street.
And it is bumper to bumper traffic most nights.
Making it a pedestrian boulevard would certainly enhance the atmosphere.
I vote a resounding YES to this idea.
Also, want to let you know that I read Sosua News on a daily basis and love the local news.
You are doing a wonderful job!
Sincerely,
Barbara
26 March 2010
Very good idea, if it does not work, you could always go back to the old way.
Noise and polution is a problem.
Serious concern is the issue of Garbage, many broken beer bottles are layed out on the curb, were will you see them after the boulevard.
will you create a larger dump site.
Tourist complain to me when they are walking early in the morning the extent of garbage on the streets, its not pretty for a tourist town.
The empty lot beside harrison's should be taken over by the city, for obvious reasons.
safty and ugly, fill in the hole and create parking lot, would generate revenue.

This is a great idea, closing Pedro Clisante every evening making it a pedestrian street so people can enjoy strolling along quietly or sit down and have a cold Presidente at his favorite bar.
Parking problem!
I have a solution that will initially cost money to build a parking garage but afterward will be collecting car owners for parking in the garage.
And where should this garage be build?
Well on Pedro Clicante East of the Jewelry Harrison there is a huge big hole doing nothing for the last 5 years...
Empty space where the garage could be build 2 or 3 levels and above could be used for tiendas or offices.
Renato
¡Hasta la proxima!
26 March 2010
That is a fantastic idea.
I think everyone will benefit from this.
Arrangements could be made with the Banco Popular to use their parking lot at night, security can be provided for a cost. (Right now I pay to have someone watch my car when I go out at night.)
Also, just like the Casino does, the business community could arrange a 'shuttle' service to and from the various parking lots in the area.
It is doable, but who has the balls to lead that drive, everything is so political in that town.
By the way, you provide a great service.
I look forward to my daily snippets from my 'second home'.

´An Open Letter to a Liar & Thief'.
So Andres, you tell Miki to tell Victor to stay out of this.
You can not show your face and have changed your phone number.
You are so brave!
Do you still have the nerve to go to church or send your girls to church?
Church is not for the dishonest.
Are you still hiding in your house.
You can not hide from the truth-it will follow you everywhere.
Everyone knows the truth.
Only fools stand with you.
You know nothing about truth or respect.
You hide under the skirts of innocent children you pretend to love.
You are incapable of love.
There is only hate and pity in your body and now you can add shame and disgrace.
To steal is to kill.
The happiness you receive will be short lived.
You are not a man, you are a mouse and anyone who stands beside you carry the blood of a thief and a liar in their soul.
Like I always told you, money is only a vehicle to get you from one place to the next place and I am sure your next place will be full of pain.
You have gotten away with nothing.
Always remember that!

Richard was a dear dear friend years ago and I had no idea.
Yes Richard was absolutely special.

My friend and I hoped to see him during Semana Santa but Paris is so beautyful this time of year.
I guess we'll see him next year for the 50th anniversary of Trujillo's assination.
Again, thank you!

Cowboy,
Thanks for your thoughts.
I have never been to the DR but will make a visit now to have a little talk with this cockroach.
My Mom always liked the people.
Good people do not do these things and it sounds like there are not many honest people?
I will let you know what happens both with the Police as well as my trip to Charamicos.
Take care!

La ChiChi, since you're there in Sosúa, can you tell us if Licenciado Michel is in town?
Our Dominican friends told us he should be there anytime soon.
Is that true?

Well I hope they catch this guy and do somthing with him, as well as others like him.
The Police there need to set an example with these Tigres and make the D.R. a safer place to visit.
Tourists come to the D.R. and spread around alot of money.
This in turn provides jobs, 'however poorly paid by there respective employeers', to the people of this nation, and influcts much needed dollars into the economy.
People like this delinquenta give Dominicans a bad name.
However there are people like this all over the world.
Most Dominicans are warm, kind, gental, easy going, hard working, friendly, happy, generous, loving, honest people.
That's why I married one.
Boston, again, if it was that significate an amount of money then talk to one of the Lawyers there.
I'm sure by now the money has been spent, and it's hard to get blood from a stone, but hopefully the guy will do a little time for his bad decisions.
As far as getting back the money, you may have to chalk it up to a learning experience.
Let us know how things work out.

-The answers to your questions are yes, yes and no.
My Mom first tried to work directly with this 'cockroach' with n success.
She has lots of documentation to prove this theft.
This is all in the hands of the authorities.
From what we hear now, he is hiding somewhere.
We will wait to see what happens now.

Chi-Chi,
The latest story from Andres is he is using my Mom's money to pay a clinic for Antonio.
We do not really care or believe this and please tell him I would love to talk with him.
It seems he has changed his number and he only calls my Mom to tell her that she will not get her money.
I believe you call him 'cockroach'.
In the US we call him something else.
Just more news for the bar gossip.

-Well we are glad people are talking about Andres.
He and his family are a disgrace to the country.
The bigger disgrace is the support he is receiving.
Have you no shame!
This is no 'small' mishap.
Your names for these type of people are many but one word is best to describe them and it is 'evil'.
It is the people as well as th government that will destroy the island.
When people do not take responsbilty for their actions and they steal from others, and their people support them, they should not blame others.
To Andres, Litia, Antonio, Leo & Eddie- your evil is being passed on to innocent children and this is sad.
To the talkers in Charamicos, shame on you as well.
Your actions announce your stupidity.
In the end, you get away with nothing.
The monkey is on your backs.

Cowboy Calgary,
So the Tourist Police who knows this did not get a 'bribe' so is this the reason nothing is being done?
We unfortunately have been waiting to hear from them.
It is sad to think that this is the mentality and accepted by all.
Thank you for your advice.

8 March 2010
Dear Boston,
No offence but you should probably kiss your money good-bye.
Unless you went to the Police while you were there right after it happened, filed a written report and paid them a bribe to look into the matter, chances are that you will never see this money again.
Even if you did see the Police.
It's a shame but true.
If you really want to persue the matter contact one of the Lawyers there, Guzman & Ariza or Juan Perdomo, their on-line, and see what they suggest.
Best of luck.
Let us know if they do somthing with the cockroach.

Dear Boston,
perhaps you didn't get the touch of sarcasm of my last post in regards of your unfortunate mother's little 'mis hap' but let me tell you this: I've been talking with people in Charamicos at El Chevere and at the Desayuno as well and, apparently, they all know who and how this guy did it.
Now, Politur - as much as I respect them and their work - cannot be much of a help in this matter, sadly.
And quite frankly I think they don't care what happens to tourists who hangs out with tigrés and sanky-pankies.
Most Dominicans, here in Sosúa call them 'Poli-nada'.
I too laughed a little when I read the words 'legal avenues'.
This is not Canada nor Europe nor the U.S.of A. Cases of tourists being robbed or deceived or cheated are countless in this Town.
No wonder why the Police stopped caring years ago.
These things happen every day of the year.
Even to 20 + years recurring tourists and/or residents.
You just have to be careful with whom you are socializing.
You never know.
The nice, charming and joyful barber or motoconcho or nail salon girl may turn out to be your worst nightmare.
Welcome to Sosúa!
And thank you...
Thank you money much...

La ChiChi,
Your attitude is sad to us.
If you are dominican, you can understand that it is only shame that you have in your life and if you want to know why tourism is down this is a reason.
I am beginning to think that dominicans would steal from their mothers.
You are only passing on your sins to your children.
Thou shall not steal!

Dear Boston,
(Lovely city, though.) 1) Was it your mother's first time in Sosúa?
2)If not: Does she have friends in the Police Force, here in Sosúa?
If the answers are not respectively 'No' and 'Yes', there is nothing to do.

My mother was robbed of a large sum of money by a person living in Charaminco.
We have proof as well as a witness of this theft.
We have attempted to retrive the money from this person and he refuses to return the money.
Please tell us the legal avenues to take to get the money returned.
